“Did you watch the latest Game of Thrones episode?”
If I had a dollar for every time one of my fellow Muslim sisters or brothers asked me this question, I would be a millionaire. The worst thing is that they don’t even realize how absolutely horrifying this question is to me.
By asking this question, you have just publicly announced to me (and my kids that might, unfortunately, be beside me) that you are actively watching pornography with zero shame. A simple Google search shows that this series has 82 nude scenes in 67 episodes.
My heart cries for our Ummah.
We have lost our hayaa’. We have lost our modesty, bashfulness and shame. And more than that, we have lost our self-respect and Taqwa (awareness) of Allah (SWT).
When we see nothing wrong with bragging about our love for these shows, using foul language, sharing inappropriate jokes, we are establishing and reinforcing a society void of hayaa’.
This goes against the nature of Islam as the Prophet (PBUH) said, “ Every Deen (way of life) has an innate character, a distinct call, and the call of Islam is Hayaa’.” (Abu Dawood)
Hayaa’ is the moral standard of our Ummah, those values we hold dear. I fear for our Ummah when we have normalized sin. When we freely discuss our immoral actions in front of our youth, possibly encouraging them to do the same.
Abu Hurayrah said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who sin openly. It is a part of sinning openly when a man does something at night, then the following morning when Allaah has concealed his sin, he says, ‘O So and so, I did such and such last night,’ when all night his Lord has concealed him and the next morning he uncovers what Allaah had concealed.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5721; Muslim, 2990).
Yes, we are human and we sin. But we must hide our sins and repent from them and ask Allah (SWT) to forgive us and keep us steadfast.
Pray for the protection of our hayaa’. Pray that Allah (SWT) always shows us what is wrong as wrong, what is right as right and keep us steadfast on the right path.
Oh Allah, protect us on the earth, under the earth and on the Day of Judgement.
